Gold Coins in Circulation

The significance of gold bullion coins during earlier times was indeed much like our currency nowadays. These types of coins are being minted in pure gold, while others are only plated with gold to signify value. Only authorised agencies are allowed to mint these types of coins to enforce authenticity and legality. The widespread use of these coins has been ruled by each governing financial body during its circulation. Governments have been so strict as well in order to control the occurrence of counterfeits to circulate into usage. This has been considered a legal tender for any debt or purchase made in earlier days.

However, despite the stringent imposition of rules, there are still counterfeits that have made it through. These types of coins have a slightly mottled appearance that can easily be distinguished. In fact, in old practice, testing counterfeits are being done by biting down on it. The relatively soft nature of pure gold will determine its authenticity. With the addition of base metals to the gold structure, the value of such coins will lessen and will also harden. This will make it harder to bite on because of the additional metals. Numismatics experts can easily determine such fraud because they have a system that makes it easier for them to determine the condition of a suspected coin.

Nowadays, collectors can easily tell the value of coin due to its rarity, age and condition, aside from the number originally minted. However, these coins would come with a price that is probably higher that anybody can expect. Collectors would sell these items on auction to gain more value and to increase the amount being set for sale. These types of coins are really hard to find these days as these are no longer used. This has made them more precious and more valuable just like other rare items are regarded.
