King George V reign lasted from 1910 until 1936 when he died from the flu. through-out his reign he saw the outbreak of World War 1 and became the Emperor of India. WW1 was a incredibly hard time for the royal family as they had many German relatives. To indicate his disapproval of the war and to show full support to the British people he changed the family name from Saxe-Coburg-Gotha to Windsor. Due to Queen Elizabeth II. present and very long reign King George V was the last kings portrait depicted on a sovereign.
During the reign of George V the sovereigns produced have two different heads or portraits. The first of which commonly known as the large head appeared between 1911-1928. The second portrait commonly known as the small head appeared between 1928-1932.
The portrait on the first coins is indeed slightly larger than the smaller head on the second circulation. On close inspection you will notice that ear is also not as well defined but in contrast the moustache and hair are slightly more defined on the smaller head. The more obvious difference to the smaller head however is the wider boarder and a second circular beading. Other differences are in the positioning of the initials B.M. which are slightly further over to the right of the neck.
On the reverse side both full and half sovereigns and both the larger and small head show St George and the Dragon. Rare full George V sovereigns worth keeping an eye out for are: 1917, 1920-1924, 1925, 1926 1927-1931
